My 2019 Dev Goals

Aug 31, 2019

Hey. Welcome to my new blog.

I've had 4 different versions of this site over the last 2 years and I've ended up abandoning them for various reasons, but it's time to turn over a new leaf. Instead of abandoning this new blog, I am going to use it to learn and grow in public. It's a concept my friend Ben Moseley introduced me to, which he picked up from our mutual insperation Tania Rascia. So to get things kicked off, here's a few of my goals to close out 2019:

Keep up with my Blog

As I already mentioned, I've been lazy when it comes to my personal website & brand. My plan going forward is to post at least one article every two weeks until Jan 1, 2020. This seems like a reasonable idea and gives me time to work out my ideas between each post.

My content will be focused on web and software development.

Create a React Native App

React Native is very interesting to me, especially if tools like React Native Web continue to gain popularity. The idea of write once, run anywhere tools can bring a lot of value to dev teams.

I'm not 100% sure what my app will do, but I've got a few ideas. My main goal is to keep it simple enough that I won't get frustrated and abondon it.

Use twitter

You're probably like "Don't you do that already?", and the answer is yes, but I recently evaluated how I used social media and determined that there's a lot of untapped potential for connecting with other developers. I also plan to share new blog posts on twitter.

If you want to follow along, add my dev oriented account: @rorywillisdev

Join a Meetup

Finally, I want to connect with developers in my city (Denver). I think meetup.com will be a great way to find a local group that wants to work on new projects or just shoot the shit about new tech.

I will go to at least ONE meetup before the year is over. Hopefully it'll be a positive experience and I'll write a blog post about it.

Wrap Up

Thanks for checking out my blog. I'll be writing a year-end post about what it took to accomplish these goals. I hope you'll stay tuned as I keep this going!
